Our Mission & Vision
A not-for-profit organization with
a 30-year history, Spaulding for Children is dedicated to building
and sustaining strong, nurturing families
for children who have endured abuse, neglect or abandonment. Our
vision is to be the premier provider of adoption, foster care
and related services. Because of Spaulding for Children, there
is a loving family for every child. The agency is recognized for
its innovative programs and leadership in collaborative initiatives.
Spaulding
for Children offers:
- No-fee-for
services
- Experience
placing over 1500 children with permanent “forever”
families
- Specialization
in placing older children, sibling groups, minority children and
children with physical, mental or emotional disabilities
- Over
ten years of experience and innovation with Foster Care services such as the Foster-to-Adopt
program
- Over
17 years of post adoption experience servicing families until the
oldest adopted child reaches 18 years of age
- Programs
in English and Spanish
Spaulding for Children has always focused on finding permanent homes for
children who, because of their problematic circumstances, would otherwise
grow up in the foster care system, never having permanent families of their
own. To remove any socio-economic barriers, the agency charges no fees for
its services.
Spaulding
for Children works very closely with you and your family to determine the
needs of the child(ren) and to help you meet those needs. A coordinator
works with you through each phase of the adoption process. The coordinator
will prepare you for the joys and challenges of parenting these extraordinary
children, provide on-going support services, will help ensure legal
finalization of the adoption, and will remain involved throughout post
adoption services.

Our History
The first Spaulding for Children was established in Chelsea, Michigan
in 1968 by Warren Spaulding, a bachelor farmer who realized that many
children - those considered "unadoptable" at the time due to
physical or emotional problems - were growing up entirely in the care of
the state child welfare program. To help these neediest of children, Mr.
Spaulding donated his farm to a local agency under the condition that the
agency dedicate itself solely to placing these children with permanent
adoptive families. Since then, although there is no formal, national
affiliation, nine other Spaulding for Children organizations have been
established throughout the United
States.
In Houston, Spaulding for Children began
in 1977 with start-up funds from the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation in New York. Originally
begun as a program of Christian Child Help Foundation (CCHF), Spaulding for
Children, Houston,
received its own Child Placement License in 1980 and became an autonomous,
secular agency, governed by a thirty-member Board of Directors.
Spaulding for Children serves children primarily in Texas
although the agency has placed children from California,
Kentucky, Louisiana,
Nevada, New Mexico
and Minnesota.
Most of the adoptive families live in the greater Houston metropolitan area.
