PRIDE We take PRIDE in our support services!
At Spaulding for Children, we believe that education and preparation are crucial for a child's smooth transition from foster care to adoption. That is why we offer "Parent Resource Information Development Education" (PRIDE) to all adoption applicants. Successful completion of the PRIDE classes is required prior to placement of a child.
PRIDE explores:
- An overview of the Child Welfare System
- Separation and loss
- Bonding and attachment
- Adoption issues
- Strengthening family relationships
- Planning for change
- Parenting the sexually abused child
- Meeting with experienced adoptive parents
- Cultural diversity
- Discipline and behavior management
- Placement agency's discipline policy
Discipline Policy
Spaulding for Children adoptive and foster parents agree to abide by the Agency's discipline policy, which states:
The primary purpose of discipline must be to encourage appropriate behavior, not to punish the child. Children must be treated with respect and dignity. Discipline must suit the particular needs and circumstances of each child, and it must take into account the child's age, developmental level, specific misbehavior, previous reaction to discipline, and history, including any history of physical or emotional abuse. No child may be deprived of basic necessities or subjected to cruel, harsh, unusual, or unnecessary punishment. Only adult caregivers may discipline a child. Children must not be threatened with the loss of placement as a means of controlling behavior. Physical punishment must not be used. Children must not be verbally demeaned or belittled. |
